A1. Shunde Hospital of Southern University

This 3 million square feet medical campus in China, designed to accommodate 10,000 outpatient visits daily, is a response to its local context and healthcare practices, blending Western medicine with traditional Chinese methods. To address the historical significance of Shunde as the SARS epicenter, the campus organizes its zones efficiently around a dynamic indoor/outdoor "eco-atrium" for infection control and patient well-being, operational for around 3-4 months annually. It's also a pioneering sustainable hospital, incorporating a public transit system, optimizing natural daylight and ventilation, and implementing a significant building-integrated photovoltaic system for renewable energy generation. Efficient site planning ensures ample open space, and sunken courtyards enhance the subterranean parking structure's natural ventilation and lighting.
